Biography
Pages Matam is a touring artist from Cameroon, currently residing in Washington, DC. He is a two-time National Poetry Slam champion and is passionate about the fields of education, violence and abuse trauma, and youth advocacy. Pages is a proud gummy bear elitist, bowtie enthusiast, professional hugger, and anime fanatic. He is a National Fair Housing Alliance Cultural Ambassador, a Callaloo Fellow, and the author of The Heart of a Comet (Write Bloody, 2014), winner of the 2014 Best New Book award by Beltway Poetry Quarterly.

Pastries & Poetry: Ingredients to Feed the Soul and Movement of a Writer

Spoken word combines movement, voice, drama, and the written word to create an unforgettable experience. It is a phenomenon of sorts in which the audience plays a central role. This interactive workshop will explore the steps necessary toward creating spoken word, from writing to editing to reciting, delving deeper into the ingredients that are essential to “baking” the perfect piece. Participants will share their stories, engage in writing exercises, and discuss both the technical and emotional aspects of creative writing and performance that make this healing and transformative art form so powerful.
