Dr. Beau Lotto's research on perception explores the ways in which we are conditioned to experience the world through our own versions of reality. Our senses are telling us stories about the world. We can control those stories to change our perceptions and ourselves. Lotto's research on illusion has taken him beyond neuroscience into business, education, and the arts.

His education program, iScientist, resulted in the youngest published scientists in the world. His lab became the first publicly accessible research space, doubling as a nightclub, redefining what science is and who can participate in it. Most recently, Lotto founded the first digital social platform, predicated on his neuroscientific research of what it is to be human. He has given two main-stage TED talks and has spoken at Google Zeitgeist, Wired, and the G8 Summit. His most recent book, Deviate, was released by Hachette in February 2016, further exploring the relationship between context and perception.

Beau Lotto — Understanding Perception: How We Experience the Meaning We Create

Beau Lotto's research into perception has shown that we don't see the real worldÑjust our version of it. It's a version we've evolved to perceive, where shadows, shapes, and even how we understand time are meanings we ascribe to what we're seeing. Our senses are telling us stories about the worldÑand we can control those stories to change our perceptions and ourselves. Digital technology that's purely virtual can't totally engage with our perceptions, but when it augments the physical reality we evolved in, we can truly occupy the space between the real world and what we want it to be.
